Q&A: Marcus Arroyo on his coaching journey and UNLV’s new football reality

Football is coming to Las Vegas. Except it’s already been there.

With an NHL team recently setting its roots and the Oakland Raiders on their way soon, sports in Vegas are booming, and UNLV is hoping to ride the wave with new head coach Marcus Arroyo.

Last fall, UNLV opened the state-of-the-art Fertitta Football Complex. This summer, Allegiant Stadium is set to open, hosting both the Raiders and the Rebels. The investment is also evident in Arroyo, whose $1.5 million annual salary is far more than the $600,000 salary of previous head coach Tony Sanchez.

The Rebels have just two winning seasons and two bowl wins since 1995. Their new head coach is coming off a Pac-12 championship and Rose Bowl win as offensive coordinator Oregon, while developing a potential first-round quarterback in Justin Herbert.
