A conversation with Obi Obialo: Oklahoma’s new receiver talks about his transfer

NORMAN, Okla. — Obi Obialo and the Oklahoma football program found each other at the perfect time.

The Sooners were surprisingly thin at receiver after the graduations of Nick Basquine and Lee Morris, CeeDee Lamb’s decision to turn pro and Grant Calcaterra’s retirement because of concussions. OU added UCLA graduate transfer Theo Howard in January, and he is already on campus, although an Achilles injury might keep him sidelined through the spring. Howard caught 119 passes for 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns in three seasons at UCLA.

Obialo, meanwhile, entered his senior season at Marshall in 2019 expecting big things, but a preseason foot injury kept him out of all but four games, allowing him to redshirt. He entered his name into the transfer portal after the season and Oklahoma quickly reached out. Obialo (6-foot-3, 214 pounds) visited OU a few weeks ago and committed.
